Hotel Room or Vacation Apartment?

Hotel or apartment

When planning a trip away, where you sleep each night can make a big impact on your trip. You want to make sure you’re comfortable without spending your entire travel budget on the accommodations. Whether traveling solo or with the whole family, getting the right accommodations is important.

There are 3 key things to consider when booking your travel accommodations;

  1. How many people are you traveling with?
  2. How long are you staying?
  3. How much can you afford to spend per night?

Knowing these 3 factors play largely into what kind of accommodations you should choose.

Let’s have a look at the pros and cons of luxury hotels and furnished vacation apartments and find out which makes more sense for your next vacation, business trip or leisure trip.

Vacation Apartments

When on vacation or leisure trip with your family or in a large group, checking into an expensive luxury hotel with rooms large enough for you all can become very expensive, very quickly. Furnished apartments, leased through companies like AirBnb, are larger, have more than a single room, and offer many modern amenities and facilities that the majority of luxury hotels do not. Apartments provide you with fully equipped kitchens with self-catering facilities, single and double bedrooms, lounge area with pull out beds or single beds. There are many condos and houses so you don’t have to worry about hearing people moving on the floor above you or voices coming from the room next to yours.It’s essentially a home away from home. You can find furnished apartments in any part of the world and most of them will even long term rates. They will require a deposit up front and many of them include a cleaning fee.

If you prefer to be surrounded by the busy nightlife, shopping centers, museums, clubs, theaters, restaurants, you can often find a hotel closer to these kind of attractions (since most of them are usually located close to the city center). Hotels often also offer the benefit of having concierge services like finding local transportation, restaurant information or other local tips & guides that the staff may be willing to share. In my experience, Hotels are also more inexpensive and you have the added bonus of not having to clean up after yourself. Websites like Hotels.com, Booking.com and TripAdvisor are constantly updating with great deals on rooms.

What about families who travel with pets?

Unfortunately, there are not too many luxury hotels that appreciate even well-mannered dogs peeking out through their lobbies. Vacation apartments are often the better option to choose for pet owners, because there are many apartment owners that already has a pet of their own.

The last thing to be mentioned here is the overall ambiance of your stay and what environment you want to find yourself in. In our experience with hotels, you get pretty much the same thing no matter which part of the world you visit. This can be good for those who don't like change, but if you want to stay somewhere that embraces the culture of the local area, you're more likely to find that in a local apartment.

There are a few limitations to finding a furnished apartment in the right area though. Firstly, there are a few more fees with apartments as they are managed mostly by private owners who are out of town on an extended trip or keep the property as vacation home so it can involve a bit more internet research than simply booking through a website that offers travel package deals. Second, most apartments don't come with housekeeping facilities. The premises will be clean when you arrive, but don't expect anyone to come in and change your sheets every day.

As you can see, there are pros and cons for both luxury hotels and furnished apartments. A lot of people seem to prefer the furnished apartment option because of its at-home environment, its affordable price and self-catering facilities they provide.If it’s available I highly recommend calling the place you’re going to stay and read about other people’s experiences there on TripAdvisor beforehand to ask any questions you might have and get a feel for the place before committing to staying there overnight.
